Charlie Lucas

Charlie Lucas is a talented, self-taught or folk artist from Alabama, now residing in Selma. He was born in October 1951 and started making toys to play with as a young child. Lucas’ art career began while recovering from a back injury several decades ago. He created an environment of critters and people at his home in eponymous Pink Lily, Alabama, filling fields with welded, recycled junkyard objects including dinosaurs and his Tin Man with mailbox. Lucas’s great-grandfather was a welder and taught him this skill. Charlie also began painting on boards and canvas, making his own frames (at times) with green gardenhose. Lucas also fashioned wire sculptures of animals and people early in his career.
The late Alabama artist Nall invited Lucas to spend time creating on the French Riviera, along with several other Alabama artists. Lucas has spoken about his artworks and creative process at many art museums and forums, including recently at the “Jule” at Auburn University. |
