Mary T. Smith

Picture
Mary T. Smith (1904 - 1995) was a daughter of Mississippi sharecroppers and lived as a sharecropper herself early in life. After spending most of her adult life alone, she began "dressing" or decorating her yard while she was in her seventies. Like many other southern African-Americans after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., she maintained a "yard show" that broadcast her voice and beliefs to the greater community. She used corrugated tin and discarded boards to create her bold images that referenced her African heritage and her belief in God.
