S. L. Jones

Picture
Shields Landon Jones (1901 - 1997) was born and lived in West Virginia. He was one of thirteen children on a sharecropper and he left home as a teenager to work on the railroad. In his spare time, he played the fiddle and the banjo and hunted. During his downtime, he started to carve figures out of maple, walnut and poplar. Although he is best known for his carvings of heads, he also loved to draw portraits in a straightforward and stylized fashion.

His work is part of the permanent collections of the Smithsonian and the Museum of American Folk Art.
